CNN —Teen sensation Endrick scored the winning goal as Brazil beat England on Saturday, putting him into the record books and alongside some of the greats of the Seleção. He almost had another goal in the dying moments of the game but was denied by England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. He is also a player with whom Endrick has drawn comparisons due to their playing styles. “In the stadium where Pelé never managed to play … Endrick with his first international goal and a winning goal against England,” South American football expert Tim Vickery told BBC Radio 5 Live afterwards. The kid is a prodigy.”Endrick’s goal against England was an important one too, with it giving new Brazil manager Dorival Júnior his first victory in his debut in the role.

General counsel and board director Patrick Stewart, who has been with the club for over 17 years, will be become interim CEO. Patrick Stewart's appointment as interim CEO would allow United's new joint owners to identify the right long-term candidate to run the club, Sky News reported, citing one source. Manchester United did not immediately respond to a Reuters' request for comment on the rationale. Arnold will provide "transitional support" until the end of December, the club said, and they will start looking for a permanent CEO, United said in a statement.

Man Utd show signs of life, but City offer real test

Another not-too-convincing victory at bottom club Sheffield United last weekend was admirable in its own way following the news of club great Bobby Charlton's death before kickoff. City suffered consecutive league defeats before the international break but have answered any doubts with wins over Brighton & Hove Albion and then at Young Boys on Wednesday in the Champions League. Guardiola will need no reminding that City lost at Old Trafford last year, having crushed United 6-3 at home. City also won the FA Cup final against United on their way to matching the Reds' treble of 1999. Sixth-placed Newcastle United will have to shrug off the disappointment of their Champions League loss to Borussia Dortmund as they face Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.

CNN —Manchester United relied on two unlikely heroes – goalkeeper André Onana and defender Harry Maguire – in a much-needed Champions League victory against FC Copenhagen. Onana's penalty save denied Copenhagen late in the game. The Cameroonian international has made several errors since joining United this season, including in a Champions League defeat against Bayern Munich last month. The penalty save went some way to atoning for those mishaps, and Onana was duly mobbed by his teammates immediately after his heroics. “I’m very pleased, it was a narrow escape as we needed to win,” ten Hag told reporters after the match.

"Especially in the dying second when you concede a penalty, but a brilliant save from Andre Onana." But Onana dived to his left to push the shot away before being mobbed by team mates at the final whistle. "I'm just doing my job, the most important thing is to win against a tough team," Onana told TNT Sports. "We are Manchester United. MANCHESTER, England, Oct 24 (Reuters) - Harry Maguire and Andre Onana, two of Manchester United's biggest targets of fan criticism, earned a huge measure of redemption in their squad's 1-0 victory over FC Copenhagen on Tuesday -- and praise from manager Erik ten Hag. Maguire, whose abuse from supporters had former player David Beckham reach out to him in support, headed home in the 72nd minute, while Onana saved a penalty in the final seconds of the match for United's first Champions League win of the season. Ten Hag said defender Maguire, who was also excellent in Saturday's 2-1 Premier League win at Sheffield United, is playing much more proactively in possession. "Stepping in passing vertical, defending also on front foot, stepping in defending forward, very confident in the duels, he is dominating, dominating his opponents," Ten Hag said. "There is a great spirit and they are together and that is important always as a team, the team is more than the sum of the individuals," Ten Hag said.

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — If gaining much-needed Champions League points wasn't motivation enough, Manchester United’s players are sure to be driven by the memory of Bobby Charlton on what will be an emotional night at Old Trafford on Tuesday. United’s players paid similar respects to Charlton before the Premier League match at Sheffield United on Saturday — only hours after his death was announced — and captain Bruno Fernandes was among those who dedicated the 2-1 victory at Bramall Lane to Charlton and his family. Fernandes and United manager Erik ten Hag were at Old Trafford to sign a book of condolence on Sunday. LONDON (AP) — On a day when English soccer mourned the passing of Bobby Charlton, Manchester City and Liverpool got back on track with wins in the Premier League. City and Liverpool bounced back from two straight disappointing results with comfortable wins to reignite a title rivalry that is showing signs of once again going deep into the season. MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Bobby Charlton, an English soccer icon who survived a plane crash that decimated a Manchester United team destined for greatness to become the heartbeat of his country's 1966 World Cup-winning team, has died. “Sir Bobby was a hero to millions, not just in Manchester, or the United Kingdom, but wherever football is played around the world,” United said. “There was always one great hope — the return to greatness of my beloved club,” Charlton said. A statement from Manchester United called Charlton one of the club’s “greatest and most beloved players.” It was revealed in November 2020 that Charlton had dementia. One of the best-loved players in the English game, Charlton was famed for his bullet shot and relentless goal scoring, despite not playing as a traditional striker. He was England’s top scorer, with 49 goals, for 45 years, until Wayne Rooney beat the mark in September 2015. Charlton was also Manchester United’s top scorer for decades, with 249 goals from 758 appearances over 17 years, until Rooney surpassed that figure, too, in January 2017. Charlton, who was dragged from the wreckage by a teammate, was 21 at the time.
